What Recover Out Loud Means to Me
By Cee Cee Mcgriff
To me, Recover Out Loud means letting your healing be visible—not just the polished parts, but the real parts too. The good, the bad, and yes, even the uncomfortable moments.
As survivors, we’re often taught to suffer in silence, like that somehow makes us stronger. But in reality, hiding what we’re going through can feel like pretending. Pretending to be okay when we’re not. Carrying a load we were never meant to carry alone.
When I started chemotherapy, I felt tired, sick, and completely out of control. My appearance changed, and some days I barely had the energy to get out of bed. But I still went on walks when I could. I still ran errands. Yes, people stared—but I kept showing up anyway. I made the decision not to be ashamed of where I was in my journey.
I also made it a point to wear a different outfit to each chemo session and take a photo with my chemo pump ( pictures below) I posted those pictures on Facebook. At first, it was just my way of having control over something—how I showed up to fight for my life.
What I didn’t realize was that I was recovering out loud.
I wasn’t just documenting my treatment—I was refusing to let it define or silence me. And without knowing it, I gave others permission to do the same.
Recovering out loud means standing in your truth and allowing others to see what healing really looks like. Not perfect. Not easy. But honest.

Your Turn: Recover Out Loud
If you're in the middle of your healing journey, I encourage you to share a piece of it. Whether it’s a photo, a journal entry, a post, or a conversation—tell your story. Say how you really feel.
You never know who’s listening… or who needs to know they’re not alone.
Your healing is powerful. And when you share it, it becomes even more than that—it becomes hope.
